pheasant, hun, and partridge farm

Our game farm has been producing and selling pheasants, huns e partridges since 2001.

The farm covers an overall surface of 10.5 hectares and is located in Montalto di Castro, near Viterbo, Italy. It was recently renovated according to the guidelines of the ARSIA Toscana specification concerning pheasant production.

Over the years, our Game Farm has become a point of reference in the production and sale of pheasants, huns, and partridges across Italy, especially in Lazio and Tuscany, supplying many shooting and sporting estates in these areas.

Within the “Quality Pheasant” project, we have supplied 15,000 pheasant poults and 6000 60-day red-legged partridges at the local hunting areas of the Grosseto Province, in Tuscany through the Public Game Production Centre of Scarlino.
At the game farm in Montalto di Castro (near Viterbo), we rear about 50,000 pheasants spread in five cycles, which begin in late March and then continue on a fortnightly basis. Moreover, we produce about 6,000 red-legged partridges for the Public Game Production Centre of Scarlino.

The facility

The production and sale of pheasants at our Game Farm takes place through the various stages of the production cycle (selection of the breeding stock, incubation, hatching, weaning, transfer to semi-open facilities, and transfer to aviaries) up to the transport and delivery of the animals to our public and private customers.
The various stages take place in different areas of the farm.

Hatchery

The hatchery features state-of-the-art, fully computerised machinery, which ensures constant production during the laying period.

Due to particular requirements of some of our customers, part of our production is carried out in French hatcheries renowned for the genetic selection of some breeds (e.g. American and Polish Bazanty pheasants).

Chick weaning area – stage 1

After hatching, pheasant and partridge chicks are moved to the weaning area. This area is divided into temperature-controlled rooms equipped with the following systems:

  • independent computer-controlled infrared heaters in each room;
  • dual ventilation line with exhaust air extraction and introduction of clean air;
  • Adjustable lighting (down to zero);
  • feeding with automated water and feed supply.

Semi-open sheds - stage 2 of the weaning process

The pheasant and partridge production cycle is completed in the aviaries.

Pheasants and partridges are moved to aviaries of variable size. They usually have a parallelogram shape with a maximum height of 7 metres in the central part. In the other areas, the height ranges from 3 to 5 metres.

The aviaries reproduce a habitat as close as possible to the birds’ natural one. The cultivated grass surface (sorghum, corn, sunflower) is about 70%, while the remaining 30% is covered with olive trees.

During their stay in the aviaries, pheasants and partridges can learn to fly and run, roost up the trees, or hide among the vegetation.
The aviaries are fitted with fixed irrigation, water distribution, and feeding (feed and grains) systems. The aviaries also feature an artificial screening system – with a 90% shadow net along the entire perimeter – and the natural screening of the high-trunk trees on the border.
